Back to blog

There are many risks that people are exposed to, especially online, one of them Email Scams.

You might not have disclosed your personal information such as banking details, or Facebook passwords to anyone. However, there are tricks that can lead you into giving out confidential information without even noticing what you are doing. For instance, if someone sends you an email pretending to be your bank, you will not know whether to trust them or ignore their requests. When you receive an email that asks you to provide personal details, you have to be careful. There have been many reports of pushing attempts that aim to steal sensitive account information. What is even more worrying is the revelation that about a third of all the phishing emails sent always get opened. This threat cannot be underestimated.

Let us first understand what phishing is

You may get an email that looks legitimate but which is far from that. These emails look like they have been sent from banks, or other organizations that store personal information for either financial transactions, or other deals. The mails contain links that direct the readers to sites that also look legitimate. These webpages are nothing but fraudulent baits that will ask you to insert your personal information so as to college a certain action. In the end, you might find yourself inserting your credit card information in webpages that undermine online security.

Use the following tips to avoid phishing attempts from Email Scams.

1. Most hackers hardly proofread their email scams. If you notice spelling and grammar errors, be cautious. Legitimate brands will always want to protect their image and brand but hackers so not. They would not send emails with syntactical errors to clients and so, they always read carefully through the materials that they send.

2. Do not just look at the sender’s display name. It is important to check the email ID that sends the messages. Watch out for small differences because they are the ones that hackers exploit most since they know nobody bother about them.

3. If there are hyperlinked texts in the email scams, check that the URL is that of the official website. Even when they link seems real; check is the destination is the right one.

4. Most phishing emails will ask you to take immediate action. They usually tell you that there is a limited time offer, or that there is potential loss to be incurred if you do not act.

5. Check the signature of the email. If the business is legit, they will have their signature with details on how to contact the. If there is no such detail at the bottom, you should be suspicious.

6. If you are asked to input your personal details such as passwords, yet you have not asked the bank or organization to change such information, you should first contact your account admin before giving the details.

7. Get effective antivirus software that can protect you against phishing. As they say, the most effective defense is a good offense. In a nutshell, many people fall for phishing scams every year. You should not be one of them because the loss can be extremely damaging. Protect yourself and keep the hackers at bay.
